Mizoram Police Seize Large Quantity of Methamphetamine Near Myanmar Border

In a significant operation, the Mizoram police, in collaboration with Assam Rifles and volunteers of the Young Lai Association (YLA), seized a massive 42,000 tablets of highly addictive methamphetamine, weighing 4.6 kilograms, near the Bualpui (NG) village in Lawngtlai district, Mizoram. The seizure took place on Wednesday, and the value of the seized contraband in the local market is estimated to be around Rs. 59.8 lakh.

According to officials, the individuals responsible for transporting the methamphetamine fled to Myanmar before the authorities could apprehend them. The seized contraband is believed to have been smuggled from Myanmar and was being brought into Mizoram, further emphasizing the ongoing issue of illegal drug trafficking in the region.

This operation comes on the back of a meeting between the Lawngtlai district administration, state police, Assam Rifles personnel, and leaders of village councils and YLA with Myanmar refugees sheltering in Bualpui (NG) village on Monday. During the meeting, the authorities briefed the refugees on regulations they must adhere to while taking refuge in Mizoram, specifically warning them against contraband trafficking and advising them to maintain social harmony with locals.

The law enforcement officials instructed the refugees to obtain permission from the joint secretary of the village council before traveling outside the village and to report to the secretary upon return. This move demonstrates the administration’s efforts to strengthen ties with the refugee community and prevent illegal activities.

The seizure highlights the ongoing challenges in the region, as the India-Myanmar border shares a long and porous boundary that makes it a hotspot for contraband trafficking. The operation underscores the need for intensified efforts to carry out anti-narcotics drives, joint exercises, and other measures to tackle this pressing issue.
