AAP Assam Plummeted: Situation Erupts as State President Manoj Dhanowar and Women’s Wing Chief Masuma Begum Resign Amidst Crisis
As the Assam unit of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) continues to grapple with internal upheaval, a double blow has struck the organization just as it prepares to face the panchayat polls. On Friday, AAP’s Assam unit president Manoj Dhanowar announced his resignation from the post, and even more shockingly, the party’s women’s wing president, Masuma Begum, not only quit her position but also left the party altogether.
Dhanowar’s resignation comes on the heels of his initial departure, with a letter he sent to AAP’s national general secretary (organization) Sandeep Pathak on January 2 citing “unavoidable circumstances” as the reason. In the letter, he expressed his gratitude to the party leadership and announced that he would continue to serve as a party volunteer. However, AAP state secretary Amlanjyoti Hatibaruah has questioned the timing of Dhanowar’s publicized resignation, surmising that it may have been met with rejection. “Probably his resignation was not accepted,” Hatibaruah told PTI.
The development takes place at a critical juncture for the party, with mere weeks left before the panchayat polls. AAP’s attempts to make inroads into Assam’s rural areas have been hampered by internal strife, and Begum’s departure is a significant blow to the party’s chances. Notably, Begum was the only AAP candidate to emerge victorious in the 2022 elections to the Guwahati Municipal Corporation.
As the party struggles to come to terms with the dual resignations, AAP state secretary Amlanjyoti Hatibaruah has revealed that the organization’s executive committee had been forced to appoint Bhaben Choudhury as the acting state president due to Dhanowar’s prolonged inactivity. Choudhury, who was previously removed from the post of state president in September last year, has been tasked with steering the party’s efforts ahead of the panchayat polls.
Reacting to the developments, Begum tendered her resignation in a letter, stating that she was “writing to formally resign from the position of State President, Women Wing, AAP, Assam, and primary membership.” The timing of her decision is particularly striking, as she had addressed a press conference just hours earlier to discuss the upcoming panchayat elections. The panchayat polls are scheduled to take place on May 2 and May 7.
