Outrage Unleashed: Farmers’ Forums Furious Over Sharp Entry Fee Hike at Kakkayam Ecotourism Spot
The recent decision by the District Forest Development Agency to raise ticket prices at the Kakkayam ecotourism centre in Kozhikode district has sparked discontent among local agricultural groups. Johnson, a local protest coordinator, emphasized this point, saying, “We are ready to accept the fee hike if the Forest department is doing something constructive for the welfare of tourists who visit the spot. Nothing beneficial is done for the tourists other than just revising the entry ticket fee every year.”
The tensions underscore a larger issue of development versus conservation, with local stakeholders demanding transparency and improvement in ecotourism offerings as a condition for fee increases. The farmer organizations plan to challenge the fee revision legally, arguing that without adequate tourist amenities, the hike lacks justification.
