Ledo’s Forgotten Struggle: Bridging the Basic Needs Gap in Assam
In a stark display of government neglect, Ledo Mulang No. 1 Bengali Village in Assam’s 83 Margherita Assembly Constituency languishes without basic amenities. The village, once a thriving hub of agricultural activity, is now struggling to survive due to the lack of clean drinking water, proper roads, and a dysfunctional irrigation system.
Residents are forced to fend for themselves, as the irrigation department, tasked with supporting local farmers, has become a hollow entity. Instead of supplying water to fields, the broken-down canals have been converted into makeshift pathways for villagers. Farmers, who rely on agriculture for their livelihood, are left to arrange for water on their own, resulting in significant losses.
The village’s infrastructure is in a state of disrepair, with dilapidated roads making commuting a daily ordeal, especially for students attempting to reach their schools and colleges. Moreover, government schemes meant to benefit farmers, including the PM Kisan scheme, have failed to reach the genuine beneficiaries of Ledo Mulang.
The villagers have cried foul, demanding that if they cannot receive proper irrigation support, they should at least be provided with a decent road. In a letter to the authorities, they have urged conversion of the defunct irrigation canal into a motorable road, which would greatly benefit the community.
Despite their pleas, the residents of Ledo Mulang have been met with silence from government officials. As they continue to wait for a response, they remain hopeful that one day they will no longer be ignored.
