Kuki Chiefs Send Ceasefire Ultimatum Ahead of Tense Peace Talks on April 5
As the Union Home Ministry prepares to host crucial peace talks on April 5 between the Kuki-Zo and Meitei communities, leaders of the Kuki-Zo Council (KZC) have outlined three firm preconditions for a ceasefire to ensure a successful dialogue. According to Henlianthang Thanglet, chairman of the KZC, these conditions were finalized during a consultation meeting organized by the Committee on Tribal Unity (COTU) in Kangpokpi district on Tuesday.
The first precondition demands strict restrictions on the movement of Meitei individuals in Kuki-Zo-dominated areas and vice versa. This move is aimed at creating a stable environment for negotiations by minimizing potential flashpoints. The second condition insists on a minimum six-month halt in hostilities, which the KZC believes is necessary to create a conducive atmosphere for meaningful discussions. The third precondition emphasized the need for a structured and meaningful dialogue process during the ceasefire period to ensure progress in peace efforts.
The decision to impose President’s Rule in Manipur on February 13 followed the resignation of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, a move aimed at addressing the deep-rooted conflict between the two communities. The ongoing unrest has claimed over 250 lives and left thousands homeless since May 2023. The Kuki-Zo-Chin community openly defied Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s directive for unrestricted road movement in Manipur by blocking security forces attempting to escort a bus along the Imphal-Senapati route on March 8.
The KZC’s preconditions have heightened concerns about the government’s ability to navigate the complex conflict and find a resolution acceptable to both sides. With all eyes on the April 5 peace talks, the government’s ability to address the KZC’s concerns will be closely monitored. The outcome of these talks will have far-reaching implications, not just for the peace process but also for the future of Manipur’s fragile social fabric.
