Supreme Court Rejects Plea to Halt Redevelopment of Sabarmati Ashram, Mahatma Gandhi’s Legacy Under Threat

The Supreme Court has dismissed a special leave petition filed by Tushar Gandhi, Mahatma Gandhi’s great-grandson, challenging the Gujarat government’s acquisition of the Sabarmati Ashram. The move comes despite concerns that the redevelopment project will erase the essence of Mahatma Gandhi’s principles and threaten the sanctity of the ashram, which has been a symbol of peace, simplicity, and serenity.

According to the petition, the Gujarat government’s decision to redevelop the ashram is contrary to the spirit and ethos of Gandhism, as it emphasizes simplicity, self-sufficiency, and communal living. The petition also highlighted that the project will lead to the misuse of public money, which goes against Gandhi’s principles. The petition further alleged that the ashram was originally founded by Mahatma Gandhi in 1917 and has remained a testament to his legacy, including his design of the ashram itself, embodying self-sufficiency, sustainability, and harmony with nature.

The Supreme Court’s dismissal of the petition comes after the Gujarat High Court initially rejected a writ petition challenging the redevelopment work. The petitioners had claimed that the rescue project would compromise the dignity and sanctity of the ashram, which metaphorically signifies the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation. In their plea, they argued that the Gujarat government’s move is against the Constitution, which emphasizes prevention of accumulation of wealth and the protection of monuments and places of national importance.

As part of the petition, the ere-porting detailed the Satyagraha Ashram Trust, which was established in 1926 by Mahatma Gandhi and Maganlal Khushalchand. The petioned that the ashram is a refuge for Harijans, as were form of service and benefits to them in perpetuity. The petition also stated that the ashram has always been a source of pride for the country and a symbol of the non-violent movement led by Mahatma Gandhi.

Tushar Gandhi, in his plea, said, “The Sabarmati Ashram stands as a testament to the legacy of Mahatma Gandhi and his pivotal role in India’s freedom struggle. The proposed redevelopment, we believe, will compromise the very essence and principles of Gandhism, as epitomized by the ashram.” The petition also expressed concerns that the government’s move will lead to the erosion of the ashram’s unique identity and its cultural significance.

Throughout its history, the Sabarmati Ashram has been a symbol of peace, simplicity, and serenity, and its redevelopment has raised concerns about its future. The Supreme Court’s dismissal of the petition is a setback for the petitioners, who had hoped to halt the redevelopment project and preserve the ashram’s original character. The government’s move, however, has sparked heated debate about the importance of preserving cultural heritage and the potential consequences of redevelopment on national monuments.
