Protecting Press Freedom: GPC Ensures Safety and Security for On-Duty Journalists
The Gauhati Press Club has urged the Assam government to introduce a law that prioritizes the safety and security of journalists working in the field. This move comes after the recent arrest of a journalist who was covering a protest. A meeting was held at the Press Club premises on Sunday, where senior journalists and club members discussed the various challenges faced by media professionals.
The GPC has emphasized the need for a “Protection of Journalists While Working Act” to safeguard reporters from harm. This legislation would provide a formal recognition of journalists through government-issued ID cards, in addition to those from their respective institutions and accredited journalist organizations. The club has also called for compensation for journalists who may suffer harm or damage while gathering news.
Furthermore, the GPC has demanded legal measures to prevent public figures, including ministers, MLAs, and institutions, from verbally abusing or harassing journalists, whether in person or on social media. The club has also endorsed the provision of basic amenities, particularly for female journalists, and has called for better provisions to support freelance reporters, ensuring they can continue their work without obstacles.
The GPC has resolved to formally submit these demands to the Governor, Chief Minister, and other relevant authorities of Assam. The move is aimed at ensuring a safe and secure working environment for journalists and promoting a free and responsible press.
The recent developments have sparked concern among journalists and media professionals in Assam, with many expressing concerns about the safety of their colleagues. With the GPC’s call for legislation, there is hope that the government will take steps to address these concerns and protect the rights of journalists.
