Milestone Moment: 1,500 Mass Defection to Congress in Biswanath Before CM’s Visit, 800 BJP Workers among them
In a surprise move, approximately 1,500 individuals, including former Biswanath district BJP vice president Dr Ranjan Gogoi, defected to the Congress party on Sunday. The mass exodus comes mere days before Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s scheduled visit to the district on Monday, during which he will inaugurate several projects.
Key figures from various parties, including 800 current and former BJP workers, along with members of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), and other groups, joined the Congress in a formal ceremony organized by the Pabhoi Mandal Congress Committee. The event was marked by a grand procession, floral showers, and traditional drumbeats, as well as thunderous applause, as Congress workers welcomed the defectors.
Dr Gogoi, a stalwart in the region, accused the ruling BJP of neglecting its long-time workers and allowing corruption to thrive. “I have seen that they don’t value their long-time workers. While they have done some good work, the level of corruption in various departments is intolerable,” he alleged, echoing his sentiments in a scathing attack on the party.
As he began his new political mission, Gogoi vowed to make Biswanath “BJP-free” before the 2026 elections, declaring, “We must strengthen the Congress in Biswanath so that in the coming days, this region is completely free from BJP’s influence.” His vow comes as the Chief Minister is set to unveil several projects, including Assam’s first automated vehicular fitness centre, lay the foundation stone for the Guptakashi-Biswanath Ropeway, and address a public gathering on Monday.
The unusually large number of defectors has sparked widespread discussion, with many speculating that the sudden influx of new members could significantly impact the region’s political landscape. As the Congress continues to capitalize on the mass defection, only time will tell whether Gogoi’s mission will succeed in transforming Biswanath into a stronghold for the party.
