Exciting Boost: Puducherry Cyber Police to Accelerate Investigations with Cutting-Edge Equipment
With the rising tide of cybercrimes, the Puducherry Police Department is ramping up efforts to fortify its Cyber wing, emphasizing technological enhancement and specialized training. In 2024, the department registered 135 First Information Reports (FIRs) concerning various online frauds and financial crimes, leading to the arrest of 37 individuals and the recovery of ₹13.5 crore from perpetrators. This year, eight cases have already been filed with 10 arrests made, indicating a continued vigilance against digital threats.
The department plans to bolster its Cyber Police Station with cutting-edge investigative tools, including advanced data extraction software and forensic devices, to better tackle cybercriminal activities. Narra Chaitanya, Senior Superintendent of Police, Crime and Intelligence, reported that along with acquiring these modern technologies, there’s a strong focus on enhancing the skills of the cyber wing personnel. Officers are being trained to efficiently operate the Centre’s platforms like SAHYOG, Gandiva, and Samanvay, which are designed to create a unified response against cybercrime.
As part of this initiative, Puducherry Police have reached out to the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre under the Ministry of Home Affairs for specialized training. They have also collaborated with Rashtriya Raksha University in Puducherry to implement capacity-building programs for their officers. Recent recruitment efforts saw the induction of 25 constables with engineering and scientific expertise into the cyber division. These officers are receiving training through platforms such as iGoT Karmayogi and CyTrain, focusing on areas like cryptocurrency investigations, social media analytics, and blockchain technology.
Narra Chaitanya emphasized the importance of public vigilance in preventing cybercrime, advising, “We are equipping our force, but people, in general, have to be very cautious in handling online financial matters, especially those offering huge returns. The only way to avoid falling prey to cyber crimes is to practice ‘cyber hygiene’ and ‘cyber awareness.’” He pointed out that the awareness initiatives are particularly targeted at middle-aged groups and senior citizens, who typically possess disposable income and may be more vulnerable to these schemes.
Published in March 2025, this new vision for Puducherry’s Cyber wing showcases a committed effort to not only enhance police capabilities but also to foster a safer digital environment for all citizens. By focusing on technology, training, and public education, the police department aims to stay ahead of evolving cyber threats and protect the community effectively. With ongoing developments and collaborations, Puducherry is setting a proactive example in combating cybercrime in an increasingly digital age.
