Assam AASU Protests Erupt in Kakojan Over Man-Animal Conflict, Healthcare Crisis, and Infrastructure Woes
Dibrugarh, Assam: Aasu Demands Immediate Action to Address Plight of Kakojan Region
Tensions mounted in Dibrugarh’s Kakojan region as the All Assam Students’ Union (Aasu) organized a sit-in demonstration on Sunday, calling for urgent action to address the numerous issues plaguing the area. The protest, which saw a significant turnout of Aasu members, highlighted the growing menace of monkeys and elephants, destruction of crops, inadequacies in healthcare, poor road conditions, and rampant sale of illicit liquor and drugs.
Aasu members protested outside the Kakojan primary health centre, decrying the understaffed and under-equipped facility, which forces residents to travel long distances for treatment. “The PHC is understaffed and under-equipped. We need more doctors, nurses, modern equipment and a reliable supply of medicines. In cases of emergencies, people have nowhere else to turn. The government must take immediate steps to solve the issues,” said Protim Neog, Tinsukia district general secretary of Aasu.
The protesters also voiced concerns over the dilapidated road conditions and recurring flood and erosion problems in the area, especially during the monsoon. Neog lamented, “Our farmers work tirelessly only to see their production being destroyed overnight by elephants or monkeys. This is a threat to our survival and food security. Many families here depend entirely on agriculture for their income. If this continues, farming will become unsustainable. The government must find a permanent solution to the problem.”
The protesters also demanded strict action against the production and sale of illicit country liquor and drug trafficking, with Rupam Saikia, an Aasu leader, urging, “Sulai and drugs are destroying families. Police must conduct regular raids and shut down such hideouts. We demand immediate and strict action against those involved in these activities.”
As the region struggles to cope with these pressing issues, Aasu’s demands for immediate action have sparked widespread concerns. While the government has responded to some of these issues, more needs to be done to address the plight of the people of Kakojan.
