Political Scandal Unveiled: Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi on Speaker’s Decision to Silence Rahul Gandhi, Alleging LoP Underminement
Lok Sabha Sees Abrupt Adjournment as Speaker Om Birla Reminds MPs to Maintain "High Standards and Dignity of the House"
In a sudden move, Speaker Om Birla abruptly adjourned the Lok Sabha during Zero Hour, citing the need to maintain high standards and dignity of the House. This decision came after Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi rose from his seat to object, with at least 15 minutes of heated discussion and counter-assertion preceding the adjournment.
As the debate unfolded, Gandhi accused the government of running the House in an "undemocratic manner" and stated that he had not been allowed to speak in the past week. This sparked a scathing critique from Gandhi, who called out the government’s hypocrisy, citing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent statements on the importance of dissent in a democracy.
Following the adjournment, a delegation of Congress MPs, including Deputy Lok Sabha leader Gaurav Gogoi, met with the Speaker to raise concerns over the manner in which the House was being run. Speaking to The Indian Express, Gogoi revealed that Speaker Birla’s response to their concerns was "inconclusive" and "unclear". "It’s absolutely unclear to me… During the Zero Hour, when MPs were raising issues from states, the Speaker took the Chair and made his observation. Without having any discussion, the House got adjourned," Gogoi explained.
The Congress delegation’s concerns centered around the ability of the Leader of Opposition to participate in discussions, which they believed was being undermined by the government. Gandhi’s attempts to intervene were repeatedly shut down, despite his desire to contribute to ongoing discussions. "We couldn’t uphold Indian parliamentary traditions and let the LoP speak. It’s all fine that PM Modi goes on a podcast and says that dissent is the soul of democracy. But every day, we are exposed to this doublespeak," said Gogoi.
While the Speaker’s motives for adjourning the House remain unclear, Gandhi’s outburst highlighted the ongoing power struggles between the government and opposition parties. As India’s parliament grapples with the challenges of democratic governance, the nature of opposition’s role and the Speaker’s role in mediating debate remains critical to the functioning of the Lok Sabha.
