Mizoram’s Newest Badminton Hub: A Step Towards Global Glory
Aizawl’s Zuangtui was abuzz with excitement as Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma inaugurated the state-of-the-art Mizoram Badminton Centre on March 25. The facility, built at a cost of Rs. 18.21 crore, is set to nurture young talent and propel Mizo players to global badminton stardom.
The Chief Minister praised the people of Mizoram for their innate aptitude for badminton, highlighting that top badminton players globally are primarily from Asia, with India boasting an impressive reputation in the sport. He emphasized that Mizo players excelling at the national level have a strong chance of reaching global standards, citing the remarkable progress of Mizo children in national age-level competitions.
The Chief Minister expressed his gratitude to his predecessors, former Chief Minister Zoramthanga and Deputy Chief Minister Tawnluia, for laying the foundation for this initiative. He emphasized that India’s preparation to host the 2036 Olympics has sparked the Vision 2036 plan, aiming to cultivate young Mizo athletes capable of representing India at the international stage. To achieve this, the ‘Empowering Mizoram Sports’ (EMS) initiative is identifying and developing young talent, providing rigorous training, and enhancing sports infrastructure.
UD & PA Minister K. Sapdanga applauded the contributions of the previous government and the Mizoram Badminton Association in establishing the Centre. He emphasized that the state-of-the-art facility, built with substantial government funding, will serve as a platform to nurture talented athletes, bringing honour to Mizoram and India.
Sports & Youth Services Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar expressed optimism that the Centre will propel Mizoram to new heights in sports, citing his visit to Gopichand Academy in Hyderabad and discussion with Pullela Gopichand. He reiterated that the Mizoram Badminton Association will oversee the Centre’s management, making it a hub for nurturing future Olympians in line with Vision 2036.
The facility features six standard-size badminton courts, a spacious spectator gallery, gymnasium, instructor room, dormitories for male and female players, and various other essential facilities. Construction began in June 2022 and was completed in March 2025, highlighting the government’s commitment to sports infrastructure development.
The Centre’s inauguration marks a new era in Mizo badminton, and its potential to shape the future of the sport is undeniable. As Mizoram inches closer to global badminton stardom, the significance of this Centre cannot be overstated.
