Healthcare Yojana Committee Questions NEIGRIHMS Recruitment Policy Amid Controversy
NEIGRIHMS Under Fire for Alleged Violations of Reservation Policy and Lack of Local Representation
The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has sounded the alarm over what it claims is a blatant disregard for the state’s reservation policy in a recent recruitment advertisement by the North Eastern Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS). The council has given the institute a seven-day deadline to issue a corrigendum, warning of a public protest if the issue is not resolved.
According to the HYC, the recruitment advertisement for 107 Nursing Officer vacancies has allocated only two seats to Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates, despite the policy requiring a minimum of 7.5%, which translates to at least eight seats. This glaring discrepancy is a serious breach of faith, said HYC President Roy Kupar Synrem. The council has also taken umbrage with the lack of local representation in the advertisement, pointing out that the recruitment process has failed to adhere to the mandated 80:20 female-to-male ratio, resulting in an overrepresentation of male candidates from outside the state.
Synrem further accused NEIGRIHMS of deliberately denying local youths and job seekers opportunities, citing the preference for male nurses from outside the state, particularly from Rajasthan. He alleged that these nurses have consistently performed poorly, leading to complaints from both staff and patients, who have reported communication gaps and compromised patient care and safety. The council president also raised concerns about the potential risks to female staff and patients posed by an overabundance of male nurses.
Synrem urged NEIGRIHMS to grant age relaxation to candidates who lost eligibility due to the COVID-19 pandemic and re-examine the recruitment process to prevent bias and unfair practices. He called for the institution to revise the vacancy list to ensure the 7.5% reservation for ST candidates, adhere to the 80:20 female-to-male ratio, and hold recruitment exams in Meghalaya to ensure fairness and transparency.
The council has threatened to organize a public protest if NEIGRIHMS fails to address these concerns within the given deadline. The development has sparked widespread concerns about the institute’s commitment to upholding the state’s reservation policy and ensuring fair representation for local candidates. The ball is now in NEIGRIHMS’ court to address these pressing issues and restore public trust.
