Freed Hostage’s Heartfelt Campaign: A Powerful Plea for the Release of Others from Gaza
Ilana Gritzewsky was released from Hamas captivity in Gaza more than 15 months ago, yet freedom remains elusive. Traumatized by her abduction, she now campaigns tirelessly for hostages still held in Gaza, including her partner, Matan Zangauker. The couple was taken from their Israeli border village on October 7, 2023, when a Hamas-led attack ignited the ongoing war in Gaza. Today, Zangauker remains among the 24 living hostages in Gaza, while the Israeli government reports that at least 35 others who were taken that day have not been recovered.
Gritzewsky, 31, endured a harrowing ordeal. She was captured, beaten, and molested as she was transported to Gaza. Awakening half-naked and surrounded by gunmen, she was terrified and vulnerable. Her captors interrogated her about her army service, and one even claimed he intended to marry her. Held captive for over 50 days, she experienced abuse and deprivation, with limited access to medication for her chronic digestive disease. Upon her release on November 30, 2023, she discovered she had a broken hip, adding physical pain to her emotional scars.
The hostages’ precarious situation has become more acute as Israel resumes military operations in Gaza to pressure Hamas for their release. This has divided Israeli society, with some prioritizing the liberation of hostages at any cost, while others advocate for defeating Hamas, even if it delays negotiations. Einav Zangauker, Matan’s mother, has been a prominent voice in protests against the Israeli government, accusing it of sluggishness in securing hostages’ freedom.
Some families have turned to the Trump administration for help. Former hostages recently met U.S. officials, expressing hope for international intervention. Gritzewsky, too, spent a month in the United States lobbying for action, highlighting the urgency of the hostages’ plight.
The trauma of October 7 still haunts Gritzewsky, who struggles with the question of why she was freed while others remain captive. “I’m not really available for my own rehabilitation,” she said, suggesting a divine purpose in her survival. Her story underscores a broader societal debate about the ethics and pragmatism of Israel’s strategy in Gaza.
A video released by Hamas in December 2024 showing Zangauker pleading for his release provided distressing confirmation of his ongoing captivity. While experts caution that such videos are often made under duress and may constitute psychological warfare, for Gritzewsky, it symbolizes proof of life and a renewed sense of hope.
As the conflict endures, Gritzewsky’s personal battle encapsulates the complex and painful dynamics of a nation grappling with war, peace, and the enduring human cost of conflict. Her campaign for justice and freedom is a poignant reminder of the hostages’ plight and the broader struggle for resolution and reconciliation.
