Empowering Minds: Sensitization Program on Sexual Harassment Prevention Ignites Awareness in Dimapur
Sensitization Program Highlights Necessity of Implementing Sexual Harassment Law in Dimapur
A sensitization program held at the Dimapur deputy commissioner’s office on Monday aimed to discuss the implementation of the Sexual Harassment at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition, and Redressal) Act, 2013. The event was chaired by Extra Assistant Commissioner Litsenthung Kikon, who emphasized the importance of addressing the issue of workplace sexual harassment in the region.
Kikon noted that although the act was passed in 2013, its implementation in the region was still in its early stages. However, he stressed that significant progress had been made in establishing internal complaints committees (ICCs) in various departments. These committees, which must be headed by a woman and consist of at least half female members, will play a crucial role in addressing instances of sexual harassment at the workplace.
The sensitization program brought together Moanenla Yaden, chairperson of the Child Welfare Committee, Dimapur, Elizabeth Humtsoe, lecturer at City Law College, Dimapur, and Alomi Sumi, Child Helpline project coordinator. They emphasized the need to raise awareness about the act, which they believed many women in the region remained unfamiliar with.
The officials participating in the program stressed that the implementation of the Sexual Harassment Act was essential to ensure a safe and equitable working environment for all. They highlighted the importance of creating a culture of consent and respect in the workplace, and emphasized the need for constant awareness and advocacy to prevent sexual harassment.
The event saw a detailed discussion on the provisions of the act, its importance, and the role of ICCs in handling complaints of sexual harassment. Experts also highlighted the need for organizations to have a clear policy on sexual harassment and to ensure that all employees are aware of their rights and responsibilities under the act.
The sensitization program is a vital step towards creating a workplace culture that is free from sexual harassment. It is crucial that organizations and individuals understand the importance of implementing the act and work towards creating a safe and respectful environment for all. By doing so, we can ensure that the rights of all employees are protected and respected, and that the workplace is a place where everyone can thrive.
