Seventy-seven years ago, on April 8, 1948, the iconic film Chandralekha made its debut, forever changing the landscape of Indian cinema. Produced by Gemini Studios, directed by S.S. Vasan, and starring T.R. Rajakumari, M.K. Radha, and Ranjan, this Tamil film took over five years to complete and cost a staggering Rs 30 lakh, an enormous investment at the time. Sooraj Barjatya, a renowned film director, has a connection to Chandralekha through his grandfather, Tarachand Barjatya, who co-founded the distribution company Rajshri Pictures and was involved in releasing Chandralekha in the North.
Chandralekha’s run at the box office was impressive, with the film remaining in theaters for four years and raking in Rs 4 crore. However, after deducting entertainment taxes, theater revenues, and production costs, the film’s producers were left with a modest profit.
