India’s Revenue Rush: Top 10 Toll Plazas Cash in Rs 14,000 Cr in Just 5 Years!
The toll plazas that bring in the big bucks: Top 10 highest-grossing toll plazas in India
In a report released by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) in Lok Sabha, it was revealed that Bharthana toll plaza, located on the Vadodara-Bharuch portion of NH-48 in Gujarat, has collected the highest user fee or toll in the country, totalling Rs 2,043.81 crore over the last five years. This is not surprising, considering it raked in Rs 472.65 crore in the 2023-24 financial year alone.
Coming in second is the Shahjahanpur toll plaza in Rajasthan, situated on the Gurgaon-Kotputli-Jaipur stretch of NH-8, which connects Delhi to Mumbai. This toll plaza has collected a staggering Rs 1,884.46 crore in the last five years. The Jaladhulagori fee plaza in West Bengal, located on the Dhankuni-Kharagpur stretch of NH-16, and the Barajore toll plaza in Uttar Pradesh, situated on the Etawah-Chakeri (Kanpur) section of NH-19, round out the top three highest-grossing toll plazas in the country.
Other notable mentionables in the top 10 list include the Gharonda toll plaza in Haryana, the Choryasi and Thikariya/Jaipur plazas in Rajasthan, the L&T Krishnagiri Thopur plaza in Tamil Nadu, the Nawabganj plaza in Kanpur-Ayodhya section of NH-25 in Uttar Pradesh, and the Sasaram plaza in Bihar. Together, these 10 fee plazas have collected a staggering Rs 14,098.51 crore in the last five years, which is over 7% of the total toll collection across the country.
The total toll collection across India’s 1,063 user fee plazas between 2019-20 and 2023-24 stood at Rs 1.93 lakh crore, with the highest collection of Rs 55,882 crore in 2023-24. The average toll collection for each of India’s toll plazas during this period was around Rs 190 crore, while the top 10 plazas averaged a whopping Rs 1,410 crore. According to the MoRTH, 457 toll plazas were constructed in the last five years, bringing the total number of toll plazas in the country to over 1,600.
As India’s construction and infrastructure sectors continue to grow, it’s likely that these figures will only continue to rise. One thing is for sure: these toll plazas will remain cash cows for the government, bringing in a significant chunk of revenue to fund more infrastructure projects and boost the country’s economic growth.
