Crunch Time for Congress in Assam as MLA Accused of Physically Assaulting Speaker in Unprecedented Brawl
A tumultuous day in the Assam Legislative Assembly has left the opposition parties reeling, as Minister Pijush Hazarika slammed Congress MLA Nurul Huda for physically assaulting Deputy Speaker Numal Momin. Hazarika, in a scathing social media post, described the act as “a direct insult to the Assembly and the Constitution.” He emphasized that the sacred institution of the Assembly, where such behavior is “completely unacceptable,” should never be compromising the values of democracy and the nation’s true spirit.
The fiasco unfolded in the morning, as lawmakers from the opposition – Congress and AIUDF – staged a protest inside the premises, demanding action against BJP MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi for allegedly attempting to attack opposition members and using abusive language during a heated debate on March 21. The protest turned chaotic, with lawmakers donning black shirts and AIUDF legislators attempting to bring in bamboo structures, which were subsequently halted by security personnel.
Responding to the incident, Debabrata Saikia, the Leader of the Opposition, expressed outrage, stating that the event was unprecedented in Assam’s history and demanded swift action against MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi. “This is an unprecedented incident, and we are fighting for our rights. Rupjyoti Kurmi should be taken action against, and if he does not comply, we will be extra vigilant and work harder to bring about change,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Speaker of the Assembly, Biswajit Daimary, intervened, adjourning the house for 10 minutes, an indication of the gravity of the situation. As the debate continues, one thing is clear – the atmosphere in the Assam Legislative Assembly is far from ideal, and the opposition is determined to hold the ruling party accountable for their alleged misdeeds.
