Ahmedabad: Nigerian Student, Amazing JP, Carves a Niche with Music on Gujarat University Campus

Twenty-two-year-old Daniel Jasper Emmanuel, aka Amazing JP, is making waves on the Gujarat University campus in Ahmedabad, far from his home in Nigeria. This 22-year-old student is not just pursuing a degree in political science at LD Arts College, but also nurturing a passion for music, which has captured the hearts of many in the city.

Emmanuel’s journey in music began quietly in 2015, when he joined a teens’ band at his local church in Nigeria. It wasn’t until 2018, when he received his first acoustic guitar, that his passion for music truly took off. Self-taught through YouTube tutorials, he started composing original songs, pouring his emotions into lyrics that resonated with love, heartbreak, and self-acceptance.

Despite being in a foreign country, Ahmedabad, he remains heavily influenced by international artists like Ed Sheeran, Passenger, and Johnny Drille, whose musical abilities inspire him to refine his own craft and voice. On Valentine’s Day, he hosted his first solo concert, “The Amazing Space,” at Studio Raag, a private music concert venue in Ahmedabad. The sold-out event was a surprise, with multiple Nigerians and others in the city, including fans, grooving to his music that evening.

In an interview, Emmanuel credited his musical inspiration to his personal experiences, the experiences of those around him, and his love for his hometown, Nigeria. “Everything I write about is either what I’ve personally experienced, wish to experience, or the experiences of those around me. My music is described in three genres: ballad, pop, and Afro pop because I am from Nigeria,” he said.

Emmanuel’s music has transcended cultural boundaries, resonating with fans in Ahmedabad. His first performance on campus was at the LD Arts College audition for the university youth festival in 2022, where he was selected to represent his college at the university level. His soulful voice and heartfelt lyrics have gained popularity on campus, with his fanbase growing with each performance. The release of his debut single, “Tell Me,” in September 2023, marked a turning point in his career, with an overwhelmingly positive response encouraging him to drop another single, “At Least a Bye,” a melancholic piece about heartbreak. The “Love Era” is expected to bring a new wave of love songs, which he promises to share through social media platforms.

Emmanuel attributes the city’s cultural and geographical distance to its acceptance and support for his music, acknowledging the food, festivals, and people of Ahmedabad have made it easier for him to build his music career. He has even considered incorporating Hindi words into his upcoming singles to reach a broader audience in the city. As he balances academics with music, Emmanuel remains committed to his art, convinced that music is not just a hobby but his lifeline, expression, and way of connecting with the world.
