Escalating Conflict: Israel Strikes Lebanon, Deadly Airstrikes Wreak Havoc, Six Lives Lost
Israels Retaliatory Strikes in Lebanon; Hezbollah Denies Responsibility
A series of airstrikes hit several locations in Lebanon on Saturday, in response to a rocket attack by the Lebanon-based militant group Hezbollah. The intense cross-border exchange, the most severe since the ceasefire with Hezbollah was brokered nearly four months ago, has left at least six people dead. The strike on the southern village of Touline killed five, including a child, with ten others wounded. Another strike in the coastal city of Tyre killed one person and injured seven, while a separate attack on the village of Hawsh al-Sayed Ali, near the Syrian border, left five wounded.
The Israeli army reported that Lebanon had fired six rockets towards the border town of Metula, with three crossing into Israeli territory before being intercepted. In response, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office ordered the military to target several dozen sites in Lebanon, including Hezbollah command centers and multiple rocket launchers. Although the Israeli army cannot confirm the identity of the organization responsible for the rocket attack, it warned that it will continue to take action against any group that seeks to harm Israeli citizens.
The escalation has raised concerns over whether the fragile truce will hold, just days after Israel resumed its war against Hamas in Gaza. Meanwhile, Hezbollah has denied any involvement in the rocket attack, reaffirming its commitment to the ceasefire agreement. Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam has urged the military to take necessary measures in the south while stressing that Lebanon does not seek a return to war.
The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has a long history, dating back to the Lebanese Civil War. The latest escalation is a result of the 7 October attack on Israel by Hamas, which led to a renewed conflict in September, resulting in the deaths of over 4,000 people in Lebanon and displacing around 60,000 Israelis. Under the ceasefire agreement, Israeli forces were to withdraw from Lebanese territory by late January, but the deadline was extended to 18 February. The UN Interim Force in Lebanon has expressed concern over the latest violence and called on all parties to prevent further escalation.
The situation is particularly dire in Gaza, where Israel’s renewed military campaign has led to the deaths of at least 49,000 people, with over half of those killed being women and children. The UN has urged Israel to take immediate action to end the violence, while Israel claims to have eliminated around 20,000 militants, although it has yet to provide evidence. As the situation continues to deteriorate, the international community is urging all parties to return to the negotiating table and find a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
