Tripura BJP Rebukes TMP Protest, Hails Historic Budget Success
As protests in Agartala over the use of Roman script in the Kokborok language continue, former MP Rebati Tripura has spoken out, voicing concerns over the movement’s handling and impact on public life. At a press conference held at the Pradesh BJP Office, he emphasized that while democratic rights include the right to protest, it’s crucial to ensure that demonstrations remain peaceful and non-destructive.
Tripura’s words come as some protestors, affiliated with the Tipra Motha movement, have resorted to seizing emergency vehicles, causing disruptions to public services. The former MP expressed his disappointment, urging all stakeholders to reconsider their approach, citing the need to balance the right to protest with the need to maintain public order. As an ally of the ruling party, he acknowledged the long-standing demand for the Roman script but noted that Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha had already assured the government would address the issue through dialogue. Despite this assurance, the TMP Youth Organization has continued its movement, prompting questions about its persistence.
Separately, State BJP spokesperson Subrata Chakraborty provided insights into the state budget for the financial year 2025-26, which has been increased to Rs 32,423.44 crore, marking a 20% rise from the previous year’s budget of Rs 27,804.67 crore. This significant jump came as no surprise, given the government’s commitment to boosting social welfare and infrastructure development. Chakraborty highlighted key allocations, including a 19.14% increase in capital spending to Rs 7,903 crore and a 12.89% hike in health sector funding to over Rs 1,948.69 crore. The government has also introduced the ‘Mukhyamantri Kanya Bivaha Yojana’, a new scheme aimed at supporting girls from Antyodaya families with marriage expenses, with a budget allocation of Rs 10 crore. Additionally, government employees and teachers will receive an extra 3% dearness allowance (DA).
The budget announcement has been met with widespread praise, with Chakraborty describing it as a “historic and humanitarian budget” that addresses the needs of the last person in society. He extended gratitude to Chief Minister Prof. (Dr.) Manik Saha and Finance Minister Pranajit Singh Roy for their efforts to prioritize state welfare.
