The Media Foundation’s Annual Journalism Awards: Celebrating Excellence in Reporting
In a ceremony held at the India International Centre in New Delhi, the Media Foundation presented its prestigious annual journalism awards, recognizing outstanding reporting in various critical areas. The event, which featured the 11th BG Verghese Memorial Lecture by Justice S Muralidhar, celebrated the best of journalism and its role in upholding the fundamental values of a free press.
The Chameli Devi Jain Award for Outstanding Woman Media Person of the Year 2024 was presented to Jatinder Kaur Tur of The Caravan, in recognition of her fearless and incisive reporting on human rights violations. Tur’s work demonstrates a remarkable ability to analyze complex issues and bring attention to deserving stories.
Assam’s Rokibuz Zaman, working with The Scroll, was awarded the Vishwa Nath-Delhi Press Award for Fearless Journalism 2024 for his powerful reporting on the struggles faced by impoverished minority communities. His stories shed light on systemic injustices and amplify the voices of the marginalized.
Priyanka Tupe of BehanBox received the Kamla Mankekar Award for Journalism on Gender 2024 for her outstanding reporting on discrimination and violence against women from marginalized communities. Her work has drawn attention to gender inequities and systemic biases, highlighting the urgent need for change.
The Media Foundation, established in 1979, has been a stalwart in promoting journalistic excellence, free speech, and press freedom. Founded by prominent media personalities like B.G. Verghese, Kuldip Nayar, and Arun Shourie, the foundation continues to uphold the highest values of journalism through its various initiatives, including The Hoot, India’s first media-watch site, and Media Dialogues.
The Chameli Devi Jain Award, named after the legendary freedom fighter, recognizes women journalists who excel in reporting on social issues, politics, gender justice, human rights, health, and other critical areas. The Kamla Mankekar Award for Journalism on Gender honors the pioneering work of Kamla Mankekar, a post-Independence journalist, in promoting gender equality and its intersections with India’s socio-political and economic life. The Vishwa Nath-Delhi Press Award for Fearless Journalism, dedicated to the memory of Delhi Press founder Vishwa Nath, celebrates the courage and tenacity of journalists who challenge power structures and expose critical truths.
