Unveil the Rich Heritage of Eid al-Fitr: Enchanting Walk Through Athar Jamath & Karumbukadai in Coimbatore
Coimbatore is set to embrace the spirit of Eid al-Fitr through a unique heritage walk organized by KV Siddhartha of the Coimbatore Art and Theatrical Society (CATS). This special “Talk-A-Walk” event invites residents to explore the city’s vibrant neighborhoods, including Athar Jamath Masjid, Big Bazaar Street, and Karumbukadai, while immersing themselves in the celebrations marking the end of Ramadan. Eid al-Fitr, celebrated globally, signifies a time of spiritual renewal, community gatherings, and festive indulgence after a month of fasting from dawn to dusk. The festival fosters gratitude, togetherness, and charity, culminating in a joyful occasion filled with prayers and feasting.
Siddhartha, who has been leading heritage walks for years, sees this event as a first-time opportunity to formally delve into Eid’s cultural essence. “Last year, my wife and I ventured to Karumbukadai and were enchanted by the vibrant atmosphere,” he recalls. “It inspired us to create an experience for others to appreciate this significant celebration.”
Participants will commence their journey at Athar Jamath Masjid, a historical landmark in Coimbatore. Established by perfume traders from Tirunelveli, the mosque is known for its simplicity and significance rather than ornate design. “The name Athar, meaning perfume, reflects its origins,” Siddhartha explains, highlighting the mosque’s deep roots in the city’s history.
From there, the walk will meander through the busy Big Bazaar Street, where the bustling market, roadside eateries, and local vendors will be in full swing preparing for Eid. “Eid is a time for feasting and shopping, not just fasting,” Siddhartha emphasizes. “The markets will be alive with people purchasing sweets, clothes, and other festival essentials.”
The final stop is Karumbukadai, a neighborhood renowned for its rich cultural identity. “We’ll navigate under the flyover and explore the area, starting and ending at designated points,” Siddhartha adds, outlining the walk’s route. These roads promise a diverse sensory experience, capturing the vibrant essence of Eid celebrations.
For Siddhartha, more than just a walk, this initiative aims to deepen local connections and foster a sense of civic pride. “We often take our local heritage for granted,” he reflects. “Through Talk-A-Walk, I have gleaned much about Coimbatore’s history, and I hope others will join in this discovery.” He envisions the event as a catalyst for participants to later explore the city independently, potentially organizing similar initiatives with their families.
The walk is scheduled for March 30 at 6 PM, with limited spots available. Interested participants can register by messaging ‘25C-034D+Name’ via WhatsApp to 98942 88422. This heritage walk not only promises a deeper understanding of Coimbatore’s rich heritage but also encourages a personal connection to the city’s cultural dynamics. Through experiences like these, Siddhartha believes, residents can better appreciate their town and envisage changes rooted in firsthand experiences.
