Seven Key Accused of Amritpal Singh Extension Case Remanded in Police Custody After Violent Ajnala Police Station Attack
A Punjab Court Sentences 7 of Amritpal Singh’s Associates to 4-Day Police Custody in Connection with 2023 Ajnala Police Station Attack
A Punjab court has ordered seven associates of pro-Khalistani leader Amritpal Singh to four days of police custody to facilitate further investigation and evidence recovery in connection with the 2023 Ajnala police station attack case. The court approved the remand after the police sought a seven-day remand, with the accused to be presented before the court again on March 25.
Speaking to the media, Deputy Superintendent of Police Inderjeet Singh confirmed that the police had initially sought a seven-day remand, but the court granted only four days. “We have obtained a four-day remand of seven accused. They will be presented before the court again on March 25,” Singh said. The accused, whom authorities claim had attacked the Ajnala police station with weapons, include Basant Singh, Bhagwant Singh Bajekhana, Gurmeet Singh Bukkanwala, Sarabjit Kalsi, Ranjeet Kalsi, Gurinder Pal Singh Gurri Aujla, Harjeet Singh alias Chacha, and Kulwant Singh.
According to sources, the investigation aimed to recover crucial evidence, including vehicles and mobile phones, which the accused may have attempted to destroy. Advocate Ritu Raj Sandhu, representing one of the accused, pointed out that the police are primarily seeking mobile phones and weapons. It is believed that the recovered evidence will help unravel the sequence of events surrounding the attack.
The accused had been previously lodged in Assam’s Dibrugarh jail under the National Security Act (NSA). Their release on Friday was followed by immediate re-arrest, with officials from the Punjab Police team, led by Superintendent of Police Harinder Singh Gill, re-taking custody of the seven associates. The transfer of the accused took place in phases, with three individuals flown out first, followed by the remaining four, although the exact details of the transfer remain unclear.
The re-arrest came after their National Security Act (NSA) detention period ended. A 25-member Punjab Police team was stationed in Dibrugarh to oversee the transfer, during which three of the accused – Kulwant Singh, Harjeet Singh, and Gurinder Pal Singh – were released only to be immediately re-arrested in connection with the Ajnala police station attack case.
