Assam Betel Nut Truck Hijacked: Driver and Handyman Brutalized in Daring Heist
A Vehicle Hijacked in Assam’s Rangia, Driver and Handyman Assaulted
In a brazen incident, a group of six individuals hijacked a truck carrying betel nuts in Assam’s Rangia on Friday morning. The heist occurred around midnight when the miscreants ambushed the truck, tying up the driver and handyman before physically assaulting them. The victims were then driven around overnight and abandoned in Mandakata.
The hijacking unfolded at around 12:30 AM when the gang, traveling in a Swift Dzire, intercepted the truck near the Bangalikuchi petrol pump on the national highway. The gang overpowered the driver and handyman, taking control of the truck and forcing the driver to abandon the vehicle. Meanwhile, the other members of the gang transported the victims in their car.
The hijackers stole cash and mobile phones from the truck driver and assaulted the victims throughout the ordeal. The truck was initially driven towards Bongaigaon, with the remainder of the group, including the victims, being taken in a separate vehicle.
This incident is the second in recent weeks, following a similar hijacking on March 10 in Bandapara, Boko. In that case, a gang of 6-7 armed criminals hijacked a betel nut-laden vehicle, stealing 48 bags of betel nuts, ₹62,000 in cash, and two mobile phones. The driver and trader were held captive before being released near the Assam-Meghalaya border. Police have filed complaints and are actively investigating both incidents.
The law enforcement agencies are working to trace the perpetrators and recover the stolen goods. The authorities are also reviewing the security measures in place for high-value cargo transportation, including the presence of adequate number of security personnel and the use of GPS tracking devices.
The scalability of the highway and the lack of effective patrolling by police and traffic authorities have raised concerns over the safety of cargo transport in the region. This incident has sparked a renewed focus on ensuring the safety and security of commercial vehicles and their crew members.
As the police continue to investigate, the authorities are urging the public to come forward with any information that can help crack the case. It is crucial to have a robust and effective mechanism in place to prevent such incidents in the future and ensure a safe and secure transportation network in the region.
