Assam’s Largest Tea Garden Workers’ Union Convenes First Annual General Meeting
The Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha (ACMS) Margherita Branch, the largest organization representing tea garden workers in Assam, held its first Annual General Meeting (AGM) at its office premises on Wednesday. The event was presided over by ACMS President Gautam Dhanowar, with Secretary Hari Nanda Gorh outlining the objectives of the meeting. The gathering saw participation from vice presidents, office bearers, and executive members representing 38 unit committees under the Margherita branch.
The AGM was an opportunity for the organization to deliberate on key issues affecting tea garden workers, such as wage hikes, medical benefits, provident fund (PF), gratuity, and other welfare measures. A key highlight of the meeting was a proposal calling for an increase in the daily wage of tea garden workers to Rs 501, marking the organization’s continued push for better labor rights. The move is part of the organization’s efforts to improve the economic and social conditions of its members.
According to Gorh, the AGM was significant as it provided a platform for discussion and decision-making. He emphasized the importance of the AGM in tackling pressing issues affecting tea garden workers, and the organization’s commitment to advocating for their rights. Representatives from various unit committees shared their concerns and experiences, with the meeting ultimately aimed at galvanizing collective action.
In an exclusive interview with us, Gorh stressed, “The AGM is essential in fostering a sense of unity and collective action among our members. We believe that by working together, we can bring about positive change in the lives of tea garden workers.” The organization’s efforts to improve labor rights have sparked widespread support from workers and unions, with many calling for more decisive action to address the challenges faced by tea garden workers.
As the voices of tea garden workers are heard, the Assam Chah Mazdoor Sangha’s push for better labor rights and improved working conditions gains momentum. The organization’s tireless efforts to ensure fair treatment and just compensation for its members will continue to be closely watched by workers and unionists worldwide.
