Unlocking the Power of Empathy: How Journalists Can Thrive in an AI-Driven News Landscape
President Murmu Warns Against AI-Driven Journalism, Stresses Human Values
President Droupadi Murmu emphasized that while artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming various industries, it cannot replace the human touch in journalism, highlighting the importance of empathy and values in storytelling. She made these remarks during the 19th Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Awards in New Delhi.
"Journalism based on human values is not going to be extinct ever," the President said, cautioning that machines, despite their ability to compile and edit reports, lack empathy, a crucial element that sets human journalists apart. The President stressed the significance of free and fair journalism in a democratic society, where informed citizens are essential for the functioning of democratic processes.
Murmu commended the Indian Express, the flagship publication of the late Ramnath Goenka’s media group, for its commitment to quality reporting and research, qualities she believes are vital in a thriving newsroom. She urged media organizations to prioritize fostering a culture of reporting from the ground, where journalists engage with communities and people to tell their stories.
The President also touched upon the changing business models in the media industry, from traditional revenue streams to hybrid approaches. She warned of the dangers of deep fakes and other misuses of AI, which require widespread sensitization, particularly among the young generation.
Murmu paid tribute to Ramnath Goenka, the founder of the Indian Express group, who stood up for press freedom both before and after India’s independence. Goenka’s newspaper, the Indian Express, famously published a blank editorial during the Emergency, symbolizing the power of a free press and hope for democratic rights.
The 19th Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Awards, presented by the Ramnath Goenka Foundation since 2006, recognize outstanding contributions from print, digital, and broadcast journalists in 13 categories, including investigative journalism, sports, politics, and more. The awards celebrate the best of journalism while paying homage to the values of Ramnath Goenka, a stalwart in Indian journalism.
