Revamped Jorhat-Majuli Bridge Enters New Phase: Rs 1,000 Crore Makeover for Assam’s Iconic Infra Project
Cost of Guwahati’s Brahmaputra Bridge Project Revised to Rs 1,019.17 Crore
The Assam government has revised the cost of the 8.25-kilometer long bridge connecting Jorhat with Majuli river island in Guwahati to Rs 1,019.17 crore, said Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday. The revised estimate is an increase of approximately Rs 94 crore from the earlier projection for the two-lane bridge, which has been inactive since September last year.
The revised cost estimate was approved by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MORTH) on March 17. The ministry had initially allocated Rs 925.47 crore for the Majuli-Jorhat bridge construction, including immediate approaches over Brahmaputra on NH-715K at Dakshinpat in Majuli. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had laid the foundation stone of the project in 2021, while Chief Minister Sarma initiated the bridge construction works in November 2021.
The revised cost estimate comes as a significant development in the project, which has been mired in controversy over delays and cost overruns. The construction of the bridge is expected to provide a vital link between Jorhat and Majoli, improving connectivity and boosting economic growth in the region. The revised cost estimate is likely to be reviewed by the state and central governments, and the project is expected to be recast with a new timeline for completion.
According to sources, the government is working to resolve the issues plaguing the project, including land acquisition, environmental concerns, and fund allocation. While the project has seen several delays, the revised cost estimate is expected to pave the way for its completion, which is critical for the region’s economic growth and connectivity. The government is keen to revive the project, which has been suspended since September last year due to funding issues and environmental concerns.
The revised cost estimate is likely to be discussed and approved by the state and central governments, after which the project can proceed with a revised timeline for completion. The revised cost estimate is expected to be a significant development in the project, which has been mired in controversy over delays and cost overruns.
