Tragedy Strikes in Meghalaya as 13-Year-Old Student Dies from Suspected Food Poisoning in Karnataka
A 13-year-old student from Meghalaya, Khrehlang Khongtani, has tragically passed away in Karnataka due to suspected food poisoning. According to reports, Khrehlang was one of 30 students who fell critically ill after consuming leftover food from Holi celebrations at an unauthorized hostel run by a private school in T Kagepura village, Mandya district, Karnataka. The students suffered from severe vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration, with many requiring hospitalization.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has expressed his deepest condolences to Khrehlang’s family, assuring them of his government’s support. In a tweet, Sangma extended an ex-gratia of Rs 3 lakhs to the next of kin and promised to cover the medical expenses of other affected children. “Pained to learn the passing of another young boy from Meghalaya in Karnataka. My deepest condolences to the family. Our Government will extend ex-gratia of ₹3 lakhs to the next of kin and also take care of the medical expenditure of all the ailing children,” he wrote.
A two-member official team from Meghalaya, comprising Sub-Inspector of Schools and Sub-Divisional School Education Officer P. Sunn and District MIS, PM-POSHAN, Shillong, R. Kharsyntiew, has been sent to investigate the circumstances surrounding the student’s death. The team will look into the matter to determine the cause of the tragedy and identify areas for improvement.
Khrehlang’s body was brought back to his home village on Monday, March 17 evening, after his death. His family and friends are still reeling from the shock, and the community is mourning the loss of the young student. The incident has raised concerns about the safety and quality of food served in schools, especially during festive celebrations.
In the midst of this tragedy, the people of Meghalaya are coming together to support the bereaved family and the affected students. The authorities are working to contain the situation, providing medical assistance to those in need, and conducting a thorough investigation to ensure that such tragedies are prevented in the future.
