Assam to Receive Whopping ₹1,283 Crore Fund for Rural Livelihood Boost from Central Government in 2025-26
As Assam Prepares for 2025-26 Budget, State to Receive Additional Funding for Rural Local Bodies
Assam is set to receive a significant boost in funding for its Rural Local Bodies (RLBs) in the upcoming 2025-26 financial year, with the 15th Finance Commission recommending a grant of Rs 1283 crore. This allocation is part of the commission’s efforts to support rural development across the country, and Assam is one of the several northeastern states to benefit from this initiative.
According to the report, the allocation for Assam’s RLBS will be increasing by over Rs 67 crore compared to the current financial year, with the state set to receive a total of Rs 1283 crore. This significant increase comes as the state struggles to maintain its rural infrastructure and provide basic amenities to its rural population. The funding will be used to improve existing infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and public services, as well as support community-based initiatives.
The 15th Finance Commission has recommended a total allocation of Rs 60,750 crore for 2020-21 and Rs 2,36,805 crore for the entire period of 2021-2026 to support rural development. This emphasis on rural development is a departure from the previous administration’s focus on urban-centric growth, and it is expected to have a positive impact on the overall development of Assam and other rural areas.
The Ministry of Panchayati Raj is working closely with the state governments to monitor and utilize the funds effectively, ensuring transparency and accountability in the allocation and utilization of funds. The ministry has implemented various initiatives, including the eGramSwaraj application, to track and monitor payments to vendors, as well as the PFMS interface, which enables vendors to track their payments. The AuditOnline portal is also available for online auditing of Panchayat/RLB accounts, promoting financial accountability and transparency.
In related news, the 16th Finance Commission delegation recently visited the Tata Semiconductor Facility in Jagiroad, Assam, as part of its assessment tour of different parts of the country. The 15th Finance Commission has recommended a total allocation of Rs 2,36,805 crore for the period of 2021-2026, which includes the allocation of Rs 1283 crore for Assam’s RLBS in the upcoming 2025-26 financial year.
