Shah Steers Nationwide Push for Stronger Criminal Laws in Northeast: A Review and Action Plan
Union Home Minister Amit Shah Leads Review Meeting on New Criminal Laws in Northeastern States
Guwahati, [Today]: Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a high-level review meeting on the implementation of three new criminal laws in northeastern states, underscoring the need to strengthen law and order to register crimes without delay. The meeting brought together Chief Ministers of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, and Sikkim, as well as the Governor of Manipur.
The review meeting focused on the implementation and current status of various new provisions related to police, prisons, courts, prosecution, and forensics in the region. Shah emphasized that there should be no political interference in registering cases related to terrorism, mob lynching, and organized crime. He also stressed that all northeastern states must ensure training of 100% police personnel on the new criminal laws.
With insurgency nearly eradicated in the region, the Union Home Minister called for a shift in focus, urging police to prioritize protecting people’s lives, property, and dignity. He also directed Chief Ministers to hold a review meeting every month, and Director Generals of Police and Chief Secretaries to conduct a review every 15 days, to ensure effective implementation of the laws. Shah also emphasized the need for greater focus on administration to reach the grassroots level, with police stations becoming places where people can receive justice.
Shah also launched the “New Criminal Laws: Standard Operating Procedures and Rules” developed by the CID, Assam, and called for the urgent implementation of e-Sakshya. He also advocated for the adoption of the “Trail in Absentia” provision to facilitate the return of fugitive criminals.
The meeting came as a significant step towards streamlining the criminal justice system in the northeastern states, which have long been plagued by issues ofdelayed justice and ineffective law enforcement. With Amit Shah’s guidance, the region is expected to make significant strides in tackling crime and ensuring the safety and security of its citizens.
