Revolutionizing Indian Chatting: Apple and Google Join Forces to Bring RCS Messaging to the Fore
Apple and Google in Talks to Bring RCS Messaging to Indian Mobile Users
In a significant development, tech giant Apple is reportedly in discussions with Google to introduce Rich Communication Services (RCS) messaging to mobile phone users in India this year. The partnership would enable Apple to roll out its popular blue-bubble message feature on Android phones, which is currently only available on iPhones. This marks a significant step forward for RCS messaging, which has already been rolled out by Apple in eight countries, including the United States, Spain, France, Canada, Germany, the United Kingdom, and China.
RCS messaging, designed to replace SMS and MMS messaging, offers a more enhanced experience by supporting features such as high-resolution photo and video sharing, group chats, read receipts, and typing indicators, similar to popular messaging apps like WhatsApp and iMessage. The service works over the internet, rather than a traditional text message network. Apple’s iMessage client currently operates on Google’s backend servers in these countries, except for China, where Google is not present. In India, Apple is likely to follow a similar approach, partnering with Google to enable RCS messaging on Android phones.
According to the report, Apple is in talks with telecom operators Vodafone Idea and Reliance Jio, which have already partnered with Google. However, Bharati Airtel, another major operator, has expressed concerns over the implications of RCS messaging, citing the potential for spam messages. “Until Google allows Airtel to identify spam messages using its proprietary tool, RCS will not be onboarded…since Google RCS is an OTT service, it bypasses the Airtel intelligent solution much as all OTT services do,” an Airtel executive told a media outlet. The telecom regulator has been asked to bring OTT messaging platforms under anti-spam regulations.
The development is significant, as India has over 1.2 billion mobile phone users, making it the second-largest mobile user market in the world. The country’s telecom sector is a highly competitive and rapidly evolving market, with multiple players vying for market share. The introduction of RCS messaging is likely to further drive growth in the country’s digital landscape, offering users a more advanced and engaging communication experience. With the partnership between Apple and Google, Indian mobile users can look forward to a seamless and feature-rich messaging experience, rivaling popular messaging apps like WhatsApp and iMessage.
