Momentum Shift: Over 100 Workers Unite with Congress in Margherita
MARGHERITA, Assam – In a significant political shift, more than 100 active members from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tekeri, under Inthem Gaon Panchayat of 83 No. Margherita Constituency, have defected to the Indian National Congress (INC). The en masse induction took place at Margherita Congress Bhawan, with President of the Margherita Block Congress Committee, Tara Prasad Dehingia, and President of the Mandal Congress Committee, Dimeswar Baruah, leading the proceedings.
According to Dehingia, the exodus was sparked by widespread dissatisfaction with the BJP’s governance, with both the general public and grassroots workers disillusioned by the party’s “misrule and authoritarian approach”. “They now see the Congress as the best alternative,” he stated, hinting at a possible shift in the regional political landscape. One of the newly joined Congress members, who was previously a staunch BJP supporter, expressed frustration over alleged neglect in the Tekeri region, saying, “We have faced continuous discrimination, which is why we decided to join the Congress.”
The defection sends a strong signal that discontent is brewing among BJP cadres at the local level, with grassroots workers seeking a change of pace. As the news spreads, it remains to be seen whether this exodus will have a lasting impact on the region’s political dynamics, drawing attention from both local and national leaders.
