Meghalaya Forges Stronger Global Agri-Links with Dubai: Boosting Trade and Prosperity
Meghalaya’s agricultural delegation is currently underway in Dubai, exploring new marketing opportunities and strengthening trade ties with the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The trip, organized by the Meghalaya State Agricultural Marketing Board (MSAMB) under the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, aims to promote the state’s organic produce and provide local farmers with direct exposure to international markets.
The delegation, comprising senior government officials, Farmer Producer Organization (FPO) representatives, and agribusiness entrepreneurs, will participate in key events, including a product showcase at Our Wellness Village Café in Sharjah on March 17 and a promotional event at Lulu Hypermarket, Silicon Oasis, Dubai, on March 18. These events will highlight Meghalaya’s organic and GI-tagged products, engage with buyers and retailers, and establish new business linkages. The United Arab Emirates has been identified as a key market for Meghalaya’s high-quality agricultural products, with its strong demand for organic and high-quality produce.
As an important step towards achieving its objective of integrating farmers into high-value global supply chains, Meghalaya has made significant strides in agricultural development. The state has focused on organic cultivation, value addition, and branding of its premium produce. Products such as GI-tagged Khasi Mandarin, Lakadong Turmeric, organic Ginger, and Pineapple have already gained traction in international markets. November 2023 saw a major breakthrough, with MSAMB signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Lulu Group International, facilitating exports to Dubai.
The successful partnership has set the stage for the current market exposure visit, which aims to build on this achievement and explore new market opportunities. The Meghalaya delegation hopes to leverage the UAE’s foothold to establish a strong presence in the global agribusiness sector. The trip is expected to boost farmer incomes, enhance Meghalaya’s agribusiness presence, and expand export opportunities, ultimately contributing to the state’s economic growth.
