Guwahati’s Ulubari ITMS: A Symbol of Failed Traffic Management in the City
GUWAHATI, ASSAM: Chaos Reigns at Ulubari’s Bishnu Ram Medhi Flyover Traffic Junction
A notorious traffic congestion hotspot in Guwahati, the point near South Sarania connecting under the Bishnu Ram Medhi flyover is plagued by poor management and planning, causing daily traffic gridlocks. The intersection, affectionately known as the ITMS, is infamous for its timing discrepancies, leaving motorists and pedestrians alike frustrated and exasperated.
The traffic signal at ITMS operates on a bizarre 15-seconds-on, 120-seconds-off cycle, disrupting the flow of traffic and causing chaotic bottlenecks, particularly during peak hours like school and office times. This disparity is exacerbated by the narrow road width and lack of civic sense among commuters, who often occupy the wrong side of the road divider. The result is a maddening scenario, where two-wheelers swarm the wrong side of the divider, further reducing the already meager space for oncoming traffic, and contributing to the congested chaos.
According to a senior traffic police official, “The ITMS light timings are carefully planned and coordinated to ensure a smooth flow of traffic from G.S. Road. However, if the timing were increased, it could lead to mismanagement in that section. Unfortunately, the poor behavior of commuters and motorists often disrupts this delicate balance, causing unnecessary congestion. We strive to maintain order and discipline, but it’s a constant battle to balance the needs of this busy intersection.”
For now, it remains unclear how the city’s residents and authorities will tackle this persistent issue, which has become a daily grind for commuters in the area. As the city continues to grapple with its notorious traffic woes, one thing is certain: the South Sarania-Under-Bishnu-Ram-Medhi-Flyover ITMS will continue to be a major point of contention, requiring innovative solutions and collaborative effort to alleviate the daily traffic congestion.
