Guwahati Cops Tackle Daring Auto Thieves: Uncover 2 Inter-State Gangs Stealing Bikes and Cars!
Guwahati Police Foils Two Gangs of Vehicle Thieves, Recovers 17 Vehicles and Arrests 10 Individuals
In a significant crackdown on inter-state vehicle thieves, the Guwahati Police have recovered 13 high-end motorbikes and 4 four-wheeler sports utility vehicles (SUVs) in two separate operations. The operations, code-named “Operation against Hunter-lifters,” led to the arrest of 10 individuals, with investigations still ongoing.
According to Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) Anurag Sarma, the bike thieving gang operates outside the state, with members reaching Guwahati by flight and staying for 2-3 days before stealing 3-4 bikes per day. The stolen bikes are then transported to Manipur via public transport, and potentially redirected to Myanmar. “The modus operandi of the gang is outside the state. They would steal the bikes and transfer them to Manipur via public transport such as buses within 48-72 hours of their stealing,” Sarma explained.
The police have also identified involvement from drivers and conductors of buses, who facilitate the activities of the bike gang. “The drivers and conductors were involved in the operation, who would hand over the stolen bikes to their agents in districts such as Thoubal,” Sarma said. The gang is believed to be from Manipur, with one individual, Inamul Hussain, from Rangia, who was arrested by Goalpara police.
In a separate operation, the police recovered 2 off-road four-wheeler SUVs and 1 regular SUV from an inter-state vehicle lifters’ gang at the Indo-Bangladesh border in Meghalaya. Four individuals have been arrested, with investigations still ongoing. According to Sarma, the recovered four-wheelers are believed to be headed for the Bangladesh border. “With regard to the four-wheelers, the investigation is still on. What we know at present is the people were planning to take the cars to the Bangladesh border,” he said.
The Guwahati Police’s success in foiling these vehicle theft gangs is a testament to their dedication and commitment to maintaining public safety. As the police continue to investigate and build cases, it is clear that their tireless efforts will lead to a safer and more secure environment for citizens of Assam.
