Urgent Appeal: Krishnasamy’s Passionate Call for a Crucial SC Census to Revolutionize Reservation Implementation
Puthiya Tamilagam party president K. Krishnasamy recently called on the Tamil Nadu government to conduct a caste-based census focusing on Scheduled Castes (SC) communities. Speaking at a press conference in Tiruchirapalli, Krishnasamy emphasized that this initiative is essential for ensuring equitable implementation of reservation policies across the diverse SC groups in the state. He pointed out that while former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi implemented a 3% reservation for Arundathiyars, it predominantly benefited non-Tamil speaking members of this faction. In contrast, the Devendrakula Vellalars and other SC groups within Tamil Nadu have not reaped comparable benefits.
Krishnasamy’s appeal is backed by the Supreme Court’s endorsement of internal reservation, which underscores the need for a nuanced understanding of the social strata within the SC communities. The politician highlighted there are about 70 sub-castes within the Scheduled Castes, and a systematic census can shed light on their distinct socio-economic needs. To advocate for these demands, the Puthiya Tamilagam party has organized a series of events, including a rally, a protest, and a public meeting on May 17 in Tiruchi.
In his address, Krishnasamy also critiqued the ruling DMK government for falling short on its election promises. He specifically pointed to the unfulfilled pledge to abolish the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), roll back the new pension scheme, reduce property taxes, and extend subsidies for cooking gas. Furthermore, he labeled the recent State Budget as overly focused on upcoming elections, expressing concerns over the growing debt crisis faced by Tamil Nadu.
Krishnasamy didn’t hold back on his criticism of DMK’s stance against the three-language policy outlined in the National Education Policy (NEP). He noted the inconsistency in the party’s approach, accusing its leaders of enrolling their children in schools that adhere to the very policy they publicly oppose. According to Krishnasamy, this selective opposition is strategically designed for electoral gains, lacking genuine concern for educational policy.
These remarks come amidst increasing political pressure in Tamil Nadu, where parties are vying for influence and attempting to hold the government accountable to its promises.
