Revolutionizing Sustainable Pig Farming with SDP: Boosting Efficiency, Reducing Costs, and Improving Animal Welfare
Ziro Valley Charity Mission Society Hosts Scientific Pig Farming Workshop in Arunachal Pradesh
A delegation from the Ziro Valley Charity Mission Society (ZVCMS) recently organized a skill development program on scientific pig farming in collaboration with the North Eastern Region Resource Management Society, based in Shillong, Meghalaya. The event was funded by the North Eastern Council and took place at a hotel in Lower Subansiri district.
During the program, Dr. Kime Gyati, a senior veterinary officer, presented an informative session on the types of pig rearing, including open and confined systems. He emphasized the importance of proper feeding, highlighting the need for a customized diet that meets the unique needs of different stages of pig growth. “Piglets need to be fed starter feed for the first few weeks, followed by grower feed, and finally finisher feed to help them reach their optimal weight,” Dr. Gyati said.
Additionally, the doctor stressed the significance of sanitation and hygiene in pig farming, advising that pig sheds should be disinfected regularly to prevent disease. He also underscored the importance of iron injection, which should be administered to pigs four to five times to prevent iron deficiency.
The workshop also covered best practices for breeding and raising piglets, including regular vaccinations, castration, and deworming. According to Dr. Gyati, piglets should be castrated after four to five months, and deworming treatment should be administered every two months after birth. The program also included a distribution of 260 piglets among 22 beneficiaries, along with starter feed for six months, to help them establish a sustainable pig farming business.
The ZVCMS has been working towards promoting self-employment opportunities in the region, and this project is a testament to their commitment to empowering local entrepreneurs. The society has been actively engaging in social and economic development initiatives, with a focus on sustainable livelihoods and community empowerment.
As the demand for pig meat and other livestock products continues to rise in the region, this initiative is expected to have a positive impact on the local economy and contribute to the overall growth of the region. The ZVCMS’s efforts to promote semi-high-value agriculture and provide training to rural entrepreneurs will not only benefit the participants but also have a broader impact on the economic well-being of the people in the region.
