Congress Condemns: CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s Crackdown on Party Spokesperson Sparking Outrage
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma Comes Under Fire from Congress Over Arrest of Party Spokesperson
The Congress party has launched a scathing attack on Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma after a state party spokesperson, Reetam Singh, was arrested for a social media post. Singh, who was taken into custody by the Lakhimpur district police with assistance from the Guwahati Police, had posted a query about the status of cases registered against three senior BJP leaders, including a former state chief and two serving MLAs.
According to Congress Communication Chief Jairam Ramesh, Singh’s post was “perfectly reasonable” and described the arrest as “worse than atrocious”. Ramesh, who took to social media platform X to express his outrage, tagged Assam Chief Minister Sarma in his post. “The arrest of my young colleague Reetam Singh for a perfectly reasonable social media post is worse than atrocious, Mr. Chief Minister,” he wrote.
Senior Congress leader and MP Gaurav Gogoi, who is the Deputy Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, has also condemned the arrest, describing it as a manifestation of the BJP government’s authoritarian rule and the suppression of dissenting voices. Gogoi, who spoke to the press, alleged that the police were being used as a political instrument and that the arrest was a result of pressure from the Chief Minister on law enforcement to carry out politically motivated arrests. He also expressed deep concerns over the declining integrity of the Assam police, which he attributed to the Chief Minister’s influence on law enforcement agencies.
The Congress party has been vocal in its opposition to the arrest, stating that it is a blatant attempt to stifle free speech and silence dissenting voices. As the political row continues to unfold, it remains to be seen whether the Assam government will backtrack on its decision to arrest Singh. For now, the Congress party remains resolute in its defense of its spokesperson, and the debate surrounding the arrest shows no signs of abating.
