Monsoon Threat Looms: Illegal Encroachments on National Highway-02 Spark Concerns in Manipur
As the monsoon season approaches, authorities in Manipur are sounding the alarm over the alarming rate of illegal encroachments along National Highway-02, which could lead to devastating floods and landslides. In a bid to address this pressing concern, a high-level inspection team, led by Senapati Deputy Magistrate Mamoni Doley, has been examining the stretch of the critical transportation corridor.
The team, comprising officials from the Revenue Department, NHIDCL, IGGL, and ADM Mao Ningreingam Leisan, has identified areas where unauthorised structures are blocking drainage systems, posing a significant risk to the safety of commuters and local residents. Last year’s heavy rains brought extensive damage to the region, and officials are determined to ensure that similar tragedies are avoided this season.
"We have ordered a complete halt to all construction activities within 10 meters of the highway’s right-of-way, storage of materials along the route, hill cutting that could trigger landslides, and any activities blocking drainage structures," Deputy Magistrate Doley said. "Those found violating these regulations will be prosecuted under the Disaster Management Act, 2005, Section 188 of IPC, and other applicable laws."
To ensure highway safety during the approaching monsoon season, local authorities throughout Senapati district have been directed to implement strict enforcement measures in their jurisdictions. The move is aimed at preventing the repetition of last year’s disasters, which displaced many and caused widespread damage to property.
The onus now falls on local authorities to ensure that the orders are enforced and the highway is cleared of encroachments. As the monsoon rains loom, concerns over the safety of drivers and passengers on this critical transportation corridor have grown.
