Triumph of Transparency: Tripura HR Commission Demands Action on Delayed FIR Registration
Tripura’s Human Rights Commission Probes Allegations of Police Misconduct
In a move to address concerns over police accountability, the Tripura Human Rights Commission (THRC) has called on the Director General of Police (DGP), Amitabh Ranjan, to investigate allegations that police personnel at Kadamtala Police Station refused to register a First Information Report (FIR). The commission has given the DGP a deadline of April 24 to submit a detailed report on the matter.
The allegations emerged from a complaint filed by Sati Rani Goswami, a resident of Gobindapur in North Tripura District, who claimed that officers at Kadamtala Police Station refused to lodge her FIR on January 1, 2025. The complaint specifically named Havildar Gayatri Das, a police officer stationed at the station.
The THRC sought a detailed report from the DGP, requesting that he provide a thorough investigation into the allegations. The commission also forwarded the complaint and supporting documents to the DGP, urging a prompt inquiry into the matter. The report is expected to be submitted within three weeks.
In a directive, the THRC stated that before taking formal cognizance of the complaint, it was essential to obtain a report from the DGP. The commission emphasized the importance of ensuring that allegations of police misconduct are investigated thoroughly and fairly. The report will be a crucial step in this process, allowing the commission to assess the actions of the police and take necessary steps to address any findings.
This development is significant, as it highlights the need for greater transparency and accountability in the Tripura police force. As the commission continues to monitor the situation, it is clear that it will not tolerate any irregularities or misconduct within the police ranks. The commission’s swift action in this matter has sent a strong message to the police and other authorities, emphasizing the importance of adherence to the law and the need for accountability.
The investigation is ongoing, and the DGP is expected to submit his report by the end of April. The THRC will review the findings and take necessary action to ensure that justice is served and that the people of Tripura are protected by a fair and just system.
