Three Masterminds Behind Delhi’s Vicious Phishing Scam Busted!
Delhi Police Bust Phishing Scam, Arrest 3 Accused, but Mastermind Remains at Large
Delhi Police have arrested three individuals, reportedly involved in a phishing scam that duped a resident of Siraspur, Delhi, out of nearly Rs 21,400. The arrested accused are Jaideep Kumar, Ajay, and Rakesh Rajaram Jaiswal, who were apprehended on Tuesday. The mastermind behind the operation, however, remains at large.
According to the police, the scam began on February 11, when Harikesh Kumar Yadav, a resident of Ekta Apartment, received a call offering him an ICICI Bank credit card and a phishing link. The link led him to make unauthorized transactions on his Axis Bank credit card. Yadav subsequently filed a complaint on the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP) and a police team tracked the money and phone numbers, leading to raids at various locations, including Rama Vihar, Shiv Vihar, and Samshan Ghat.
Police investigations revealed that Yadav was one of around 500 victims of the scam, and the accused had set up fraudulent websites to inspire confidence among their victims. Jaideep, considered the most trained of the lot, was proficient in multiple programming languages, including Java and Python, and had undergone training on GitHub. He was also allegedly involved in a similar scam in the past, for which he was arrested by the Special Cell/IFSO.
The police further stated that Jaideep used Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) to access remote systems and set up fraudulent websites using hosting platforms. Ajay, a class 9 dropout, was responsible for arranging SIM cards for the scam, while Rakesh, a class 12 dropout, was the salesman, responsible for pitching the credit cards to victims.
The police have described Jaideep as a "highly trained" and "sophisticated" fraudster, with a background in programming and ethics hacking. His skills included setting up legitimate-looking websites and using free hosting platforms to create fraudulent sites. The police are working to track down the mastermind, who remains elusive, but have jailed three key conspirators.
This incident highlights the need for vigilance in the face of cybercrime, as unsuspecting victims like Yadav are targeted by sophisticated fraudsters. The Delhi Police’s timely intervention and swift action have brought three of the accused to justice, but the search for the mastermind continues.
