Academic Agony: NEHU Students Fend Off Agenda-Driven Professors
SHILLONG, MARCH 11: NEHU Vice Chancellor Prabha Shankar Shukla has lashed out at a group of professors at the center of the ongoing unrest, accusing them of prioritizing their personal agendas over the students’ welfare. In a passionate appeal, Shukla urged students to shun the “aggressive protests” and instead work together to rebuild the university with “wisdom, patience, and mutual respect.”
Shukla, who spoke to students on Monday, questioned whether the so-called “leaders” driving the protests truly care about the students’ well-being or are simply using them to further their own interests. “Are you really fighting for a cause that benefits you, or are you being misled?” he asked. “Do not let the ambitions of a few individuals destroy your future. It is time to bring peace back to NEHU. Let us not allow NEHU’s reputation to suffer because of a few selfish individuals.”
The Vice Chancellor acknowledged that he has always been open to engaging with students and addressing their concerns. “I have invited student representatives to meet me and share their concerns. I have also accepted many of your demands, such as appointing a Pro-Vice-Chancellor.” However, he lamented that the refusal to engage in peaceful dialogue and the involvement of external groups have exacerbated the situation, turning a student movement into a “politically motivated conflict.”
Shukla’s appeal is a desperate attempt to restore peace to the campus, which has been plagued by violence and disruptions. The faculty and staff have faced threats, and the situation has become increasingly chaotic, with real issues taking a backseat to personalized agendas. “It is you, the students, who will be affected the most. Your academic schedule has been disrupted, your future job opportunities and higher studies are at risk, and the reputation of your degrees is being damaged,” he warned.
As the VC, Shukla emphasized his commitment to making NEHU a place where students can learn and grow in a safe and peaceful environment. “Every decision I have made has been for the betterment of this institution, not for personal gain. But I cannot do this alone. I need your support,” he said, urging students to “think carefully and see through the lies and manipulations.”
With the situation rapidly spiraling out of control, the Vice Chancellor’s message is clear: the students must come together to take back control of their education, to reject the agitators and instead work towards a brighter future. Will they heed his warning, or will the situation continue to deteriorate, leaving the future of NEHU hanging in the balance?
