Northeast’s Warmest Welcome: Sikkim Attracts Record 1.62 Lakh Foreign Tourists in 2022-23
Sikkim Tourism Makes a Remarkable Comeback as Pandemic Era Restrictions Ease, Attracts 1.62 Lakh Foreign Tourists in 2022-2023
The hill state of Sikkim has emerged as the highest tourist-generating region in the Northeastern states of India, with a remarkable rebound in its tourism industry following the easing of COVID-19 pandemic restrictions. According to the Union Tourism Minister, Sikkim welcomed 68,645 international visitors in 2022, and this number surged to 93,908 in 2023.
The figures were shared by the Union Tourism Minister in response to a question posed by Sikkim Lok Sabha MP Indra Hang Subba in Parliament. The minister credited the tireless efforts of Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang-Golay in reviving the state’s tourism sector, which provides employment to 18% of the state’s population. The efforts of the Sikkim government, combined with those of the Travel Agents Association of Sikkim, have played a significant role in the state’s post-COVID recovery.
Sikkim Lok Sabha MP Indra Hang Subba emphasized that these figures reflect the growing popularity of Sikkim among international tourists, which is attributed to the state’s efforts to promote itself as a safe and attractive destination. The MP also highlighted that the Sikkim government has accorded top priority to strengthening the tourism sector, as evident in the 2024-25 State Budget, which focuses on boosting the sector through innovative projects and a robust road network.
As the summer tourism season approaches, the Sikkim government is engaged in discussions with concerned Union ministries and Central agencies to ensure smooth air and road connectivity to the state. This includes the Pakyong Airport and National Highway 10, which are crucial for maximum tourism arrivals. Indra Hang Subba met with the Union Civil Aviation Minister and NHIDCL officials recently to discuss the smooth operation of Pakyong Airport and NH 10.
The MP reassured that the Sikkim government is committed to reviving the state’s tourism industry, which provides a vital source of income for the local population. With its unique cultural heritage, breathtaking natural beauty, and well-planned infrastructure, Sikkim is poised for a major resurgence as a popular tourist destination. As the state gears up for the summer season, its tourist arrivals are likely to continue to rise, making it an attractive option for travelers seeking a unique Himalayan experience.
