Ali Sheha, a Baniyas resident, recounted how gunmen executed what he termed “revenge killings” against Alawites tied to Assad’s regime. Sheha shared, “Bodies were on the streets” as gunmen positioned near their homes fired indiscriminately. Eyewitnesses also reported instances where attackers demanded identification to determine victims’ religion before continuing the killings.
The Syrian Observatory’s Rami Abdurrahman, referencing these brutal retaliations, termed them as one of the conflict’s gravest massacres. Official reports later indicated that government forces have reportedly regained control in several regions previously held by Assad loyalists. An unnamed Defense Ministry official said roads leading to the coastal zone were closed to restore stability gradually.
In another tragic development linked to the revenge attacks, residents buried 31 victims, including nine children and four women, in a mass grave in Tuwaym, reflecting the human toll of this sectarian violence. Meanwhile, Lebanese legislator Haidar Nasser lamented the fleeing wave of Alawites seeking refuge in Lebanon. Urging international protection for Alawites, Nasser highlighted the plight of those dismissed from their jobs and the continuing threats against reconciled former soldiers.
