“This is still out of control at this moment,” Gov. Hochul communicated to Long Island’s News 12. She warned that further evacuations might become necessary as the flames threatened local infrastructure, including homes, a chemical factory, and an Amazon warehouse in the vicinity. The Air National Guard played a pivotal support role, deploying helicopters to perform water drops over the affected areas. Meanwhile, Southampton authorities cautioned residents against lighting recreational fires due to heightened wildfire risks, aligning their warnings with visual reports of the spreading fires.
The National Guard’s operations included collaboration with local law enforcement, ensuring a coordinated and efficient response. Governor Hochul emphasized her commitment to public safety, stating, “Public safety is my top priority, and I’m committed to doing everything possible to keep Long Islanders safe.”
Gov. Hochul refrained from predicting the fire’s path or potential growth, but rough satellite data from NASA suggested that the fire and smoke spread approximately 2.5 miles along Sunrise Highway, a crucial arterial route to the East End. Police actions included cordoning off sections of this highway to manage public safety and facilitate emergency operations.
The fires loomed dangerously near the Francis S. Gabreski Airport, prompting evacuations of base personnel as a precautionary measure in the early afternoon, according to spokesperson Cheran Campbell. At least one helicopter was dispatched from the airport to aid firefighting efforts.
The prevailing conditions underscore the critical importance of ongoing vigilance and community cooperation as authorities strive to bring the fires under control and protect Long Island’s residents and infrastructure.
