Kuki-Zo Tribal Body Declares Statewide Shutdown Against Bus Service Resumption, Protest Looms Large
A State of Tension: Kuki-Zo Tribals Observe Indefinite Shutdown, Protest Against Bus Services and Meitei Community’s March to Hill Areas
Imphal, March 8 – The Kuki-Zo Council (KZC), the apex body of Kuki-Zo tribals in Manipur, has called for an indefinite shutdown in all Kuki-Zo dominated areas, starting Saturday midnight, in protest against the resumption of bus services and the Meitei community’s march to hill areas. The decision comes amid violent confrontations between security forces and protesters, resulting in the death of one individual and several injuries, including reported cases of sexual violence against women.
According to the KZC, the resumption of bus services from Imphal to tribal-dominated districts has led to a surge in violent incidents, with security forces using excessive force, resulting in the death of Lalgun Singsit and the hospitalisation of two others in critical condition. The KZC has expressed concern over the use of force by security personnel, stating it only intensifies the protesters’ resolve. Furthermore, at least 50 women have suffered serious injuries, highlighting the security forces’ alleged use of excessive force.
The KZC has condemned the government’s decision to resume the bus service, citing their awareness of the potential for violence. The organisation has urged the government to address the underlying issues to prevent further unrest and protect public safety. The KZC also emphasized that the idea of peace cannot be achieved through the imposition of force at the expense of a particular community. The Kuki Students’ Organisation has supported the KZC’s move, calling for the indefinite shutdown.
The peace march from Imphal to Senapati district, announced by the Federation of Civil Society (FOCS) along with other organizations, is expected to pass through the Kuki-Zo inhabited Kangpokpi district. The FOCS has urged Kuki organizations to join the rally instead of opposing it. However, the KZC has expressed strong opposition to the march, citing the government’s failure to address the community’s concerns and the potential for further violence.
The recent events have sent shockwaves of worry through the region, with at least two state transport buses being attacked in Kangpokpi and another area in Manipur on Saturday. Despite being escorted by the Central Armed Police Force (CAPF), activists of tribal organizations allegedly targeted the buses, including one vehicle bound for Senapati district. The development has sparked concerns about the possible escalation of tensions and the potential for further violence.
As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how the government will respond to the demands of the Kuki-Zo community and the concerns of the Meitei community. For now, the standoff remains, with the KZC reiterating its call for the government to reconsider its stance and address the underlying issues to prevent further escalation.
