Pacifying the Peaceful State: Meitei CSOs March Forward for Harmony in Manipur

Meitei Civil Society Organisation to Proceed with Planned Peace March in Manipur

In a press statement, the Federation of Civil Society (FOCS) announced that it will go ahead with its planned peace march from Imphal to Senapati district on March 8, despite opposition from three Kuki organisations. FOCS President Th. Manihar cited Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s recent announcement allowing the free movement of all people on all roads in Manipur from March 8 as the reason for proceeding with the march.

According to Manihar, the goal of the peace march is to convey a message of harmony and reconciliation, rather than to provoke any particular group. He urged the three Kuki organisations that have objected to the march to reconsider and join the effort, stating that it is necessary to see if the Centre stands by its commitment to allowing free movement.

The march is scheduled to begin at 8 am from Kangla Gate and will pass through Kangpokpi district, which is predominantly inhabited by the Kuki community. FOCS has also planned another march to the border town of Moreh in the near future. Manihar emphasized that organisations like the Committee on Tribal Unity (COTU) and the Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF) have not opposed the march and have been invited to support this gesture of peace.

In an effort to create a unified front, Manihar reached out to the three Kuki organisations, urging them to put aside their differences and join the march. He believes that the event can serve as a step towards solidarity and understanding among different communities in the state. The march is also seen as an opportunity to demonstrate the Centre’s commitment to its recent announcement on allowing free movement in Manipur.

The planned peace march has garnered significant attention in recent days, with many in the community eagerly awaiting its outcome. As the event approaches, it remains to be seen how the various stakeholders will respond to the call for peace and reconciliation. One thing is certain, however: the eyes of the nation will be on Manipur as it embarks on this historic journey.
