Former Peruvian President Pedro Castillo Goes on Trial for Rebellion and Abuse of Power

Peruvian authorities have brought former President Pedro Castillo to trial, charging him with rebellion, grave abuse of authority, and perturbing public tranquility. The charges stem from his failed attempt to declare a state of emergency and dissolve Congress in December 2022, just before lawmakers were set to vote on his impeachment. The move sparked violent protests in the country, resulting in at least 49 deaths.

Castillo, Peru’s first Indigenous president, was dismissed by Congress and arrested after prosecutors accused him of trying to promote a coup. He has been held in a police base since his removal from office. Prosecutors are seeking a 34-year prison sentence against the former union leader and rural school teacher, who surprisingly won the 2021 election against the nation’s political establishment.

At the trial, Castillo admitted that he made a speech on national television in which he attempted to dissolve Congress and call for new elections. He denied the charges, saying, “All I did was express the wishes of the people through a speech.” Castillo has been representing himself in court, refusing to hire a lawyer and instead appointing a public defender.

The trial is taking place at a police base, with Castillo arriving half an hour late to the proceedings. The former president has described the trial as a “farce” on his social media accounts. His supporters have argued that conservative parties in Congress were blocking his policy initiatives and hindering his efforts to boost government spending and bring education and infrastructure to neglected rural areas.

Castillo’s opponents, however, have accused him of corruption and attempting to undermine democracy by dissolving Congress. His removal from office has led to rifts with left-leaning administrations in Colombia and Mexico, where his family sought refuge after he was deposed. Colombian President Gustavo Petro, a longtime ally of Castillo, expressed his support for the former president, stating that he is being tried for rebellion because “he is poor and from the left.” Peru is scheduled to hold elections next year, with current Vice President Dina Boluarte serving out the remainder of Castillo’s term.

The trial is a sensitive and complex issue, with many Peruvians divided on the matter. Protests and demonstrations have been ongoing in the country, with some calling for Castillo’s release and others demanding justice and accountability. As the case unfolds, the Peruvian people will continue to watch and weigh in on the role of their former president and the events that led to his removal from office.
