The Canary Islands are currently experiencing an unusual spell of severe weather, with heavy snowfall and flash floods significantly impacting the region. Residents are grappling with the aftermath of flash floods that turned streets into rivers, swept away vehicles, and left communities covered in layers of mud. Now, a fresh wave of concern arises as snow blankets the picturesque Teide National Park and parts of Tenerife, while heavy rainfall continues to batter certain areas.
In response to these extreme conditions, the authorities have declared a “state of pre-alert.” Both Tenerife and La Palma remain on high alert as further snowfall is anticipated today, according to reports from The Sun. The Spanish national weather agency, Aemet, has issued a yellow weather warning for the islands, in effect until this evening. Nearly four centimeters of snow is predicted to accumulate within 24 hours. Aemet cautions that the snowfall might be intense in the form of showers, particularly at altitudes between 1800 to 2000 meters, with even more substantial snow accumulations expected at higher elevations.
The continuing downpour has also forced the shutdown of Gran Canaria Airport, located 10 kilometers inland from the coast. AENA, the airport operator, informed Metro that the airport is currently inoperative due to excessive rainwater flooding the runways. Efforts are underway to clear the water and resume operations at the earliest opportunity.
Telde, situated to the east of the Canary Islands, has borne the brunt of these torrential rains, prompting local officials to close beaches and advise residents to stay put and avoid travel. Dramatic images from Telde show cars partly submerged and navigating through waterlogged streets, although, fortunately, no injuries have been reported. Despite the cessation of rain overnight, the area continues to reel from the flooding, and more rainfall is forecasted throughout the week.
Local authorities previously issued warnings, urging caution and recommending that residents avoid traveling through or along ravines, particularly during morning hours when there’s a high likelihood of heavy rain in Telde. This unusual wintry deluge closely follows catastrophic floods in southern Spain, which resulted in 200 fatalities. The present deluge and snowfall phenomenon have been attributed to DANA, a Spanish term for a high-altitude isolated depression.
The situation in the Canary Islands underscores the broader concerns of unusual weather patterns affecting regions globally.
